Principal Consultant and Founder -
Paul O. Haugsjaa, Ph.D. (contact info)Dr. Haugsjaa brings a wealth of experience and insight to organizations involved in the development and manufacturing of communications, power conversion, and advanced materials components and equipment.
He understands today's fast moving commercial environment and is vitally cognizant of intellectual property issues along with the need for structure and team work in R&D to support product evolution. Attention to the details of manufacturability, cost, reliability and quality control is a hallmark of his approach to product development and maturation.
Dr. Haugsjaa has been a key participant in both well-established and startup organizations over his career. He began his technological work at GTE (Verizon) Laboratories serving in roles from individual contributor to manager of large multidisciplined departments. There his interests ranged broadly from fiber optics, semiconductor devices, advanced materials, displays, light sources, microwave electronics, electrochemical power conversion, communications systems and hardware engineering. While at GTE Laboratories, Dr. Haugsjaa pioneered the development of silicon waferboard and optoelectronic device technology to allow passive alignment of arrays of optoelectronic components to single-mode optical fibers utilizing micromachined structures for low- cost, reliable packaging. At Foster-Miller, Inc. he led the development of government and industry supported R & D business in the area of photonic devices and optoelectronic packaging, concentrating on massively parallel array interconnects, WDM add/drop multiplexers and ultrahigh speed photonic devices. Recently as Senior Director of Optical Switching at Axiowave Networks, a startup company, he formed and led a team of scientists and engineers in the development of a very large, MEMS-based optical communications switch and established the required manufacturing structure to implement this complex system element.
Dr. Haugsjaa has published over 50 articles in the professional literature, including several book chapters, and is an inventor with over 38 U.S. patents. He is a senior member of the IEEE, a past Chairman of the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society Committee on Optoelectronic Packaging, Manufacturing and Reliability, and served for many years on the program committee for the Electronic Components and Technology Conference. As a recognized authority on optical packaging, Dr. Haugsjaa has been teaching a short course on Optoelectronic Packaging at the Optical Fiber Conference (OFC) to "sold-out" audiences. He also has served a term as the chairman of the New England Section and an advisor to the National Council of the American Physical Society. Dr. Haugsjaa holds a Ph.D. in Atomic and Molecular Physics from the University of Denver.
In each of his endeavors, Dr. Haugsjaa brings a tireless energy and commitment to excellence to the search for solutions to complex, interdisciplinary technical problems. A team player in every sense of the word, he becomes a valuable augmentation to any product team.
